I want to take this post seriously but QBR is some made up bullshit by ESPN.

Chances are if they went back and retroactively did QBR a hunch of other people have a similar number.

All that being said everything you say is accurate, and Lamar Jackson is having an excellent season as a quarterback.

Charlie Batch threw for 186 yards and 2 INTs and had the highest QBR of all time.

Showing my noobness here, but I followed NCAA Football from the beginning of the season until the end for the first time this year, and I have a question. What's the point of bowl games? Is there any meaning behind them besides just giving good teams outside of the top 4 a random game at the end of the year? This is something I wrote elsewhere, that I'll copy and paste here. It doesn't directly answer your question, but it does answer it more completely:

When talking about the college football system and why it is so ridiculous today, you have to remember it is college, not professional. This is very important, especially since fall college semester usually runs from late August to early December, and with the physical nature of American football, playing more than once a week regularly is not recommended. So that means there is simply not enough opportunities to play more teams (historically speaking, of late those "rules" have been bent quite a bit).

You also have to remember the original college football system grew organically. Because travel was difficult and expensive, it made sense for colleges in the same region to enter agreements to play each other, to help keep the university's program going and the costs lower. High schools today still do the same thing. This is where the conferences come from and why, historically, they are regionally based. (The regional thing also explains Notre Dame's prominence through much of history, despite its more stringent academic standards, as they were regularly on national broadcasts, whereas other schools were more local and regional).

The bowl system came in when businesses used college football as an attraction to big events (the original being the Tournament of Roses in California, the game which is called the Rose Bowl...as the Rose Bowl was played in a bowl like stadium, the name for postseason games became known as "bowls"). Each of the major bowl games had ties to specific conferences. For example, the Rose Bowl was the "West vs. East" game, which had ties to the Pac-10 and the Big-10 conferences. Other bowls had ties to specific conferences as well.

Keeping ALL of that in mind (short season necessitated by college semesters, difficulty of travel early on, bowl systems and their tie-ins), there was no real way to determine a true national champion. Because of this, national champions were "determined" by polls of voters (The Associated Press and the Coaches poll being the two most prominent at the end). That's why there were years where there would be multiple national champions, such as in 1997 when Michigan won the AP poll and Nebraska won the Coaches Poll. By the 90's most people saw the absurdity of the system currently in place. However, regional loyalty and bowl associations were SO strong, simply changing to a tournament format was not an option. Too much history/tradition and, more importantly, too much power and money.

So that's why they went to the computer system, the BCS...computers were all the rage at the time, the stated goal was to determine a TRUE national champion and that's why we had the BCS. Of course, some of the computerized factors were still "subjective" (for example, the AP and Coaches poll were used in the computer ranking, because, again, power and influence) so it was always seen as a terrible fix to an easily solved problem.

Now we finally have the 4 team playoff, but as mentioned, money and power is unduly influencing it. If the playoff were expanded to 8 teams, then a football team from one of the non Power Conferences (which are currently the ACC, the Big 10, the Big 12, the SEC and the Pac-12) might get into the tournament. And if one of those teams gets into the tournament, then the revenue sharing system means a non-Power conference would get some of that lucrative money.

So, eventually, we'll move to 8 teams, like we should have, but I'm sure it'll only come when the Power conferences figure out a way to not be damaged monetarily.

There's other things I could have added, but I think that's enough unasked for info for now.

To more directly answer why we have bowl games currently, it is for a number of reasons.

1) History. Some of these bowl games date back decades and, as I mentioned in the piece I copied/pasted, those bowl games had relevance at one point.
2) Money. This is probably the most important factor. It is money for the bowl organizers, advertising for the sponsors and money for the colleges.
3) College Exposure. Getting to play a bowl game gives your university greater media exposure and on a national scale. This helps with fundraising and with recruiting.
4) Extra playing time. Every coach loves to play more games, so kids can, theoretically, improve their skills and so coaches can try out different things.

I think we've all said the Patriots dynasty was over at some point, but I honestly believe this is the end.

I may have posted this before, but it's still insane to me and a testament of just how bad the Browns have been.

In week 4, the Browns beat the Ravens 40-25, leaving both teams with a 2-2 record. The game wasn't very close. Lamar really struggled. I was ready to crown the Browns champions of the AFC North.

But since God hates the Browns, the Ravens won their next 12 games and finished with the best record in the league and Lamar is the MVP favorite.

The Browns finished 6-10 after being a virtual lock for the playoffs and a Super Bowl sleeper.

I don't know much about Judge either, but I don't get it. Whether he is diminished or not, Tom Brady still couldn't get the ball to anybody aside from Edelman this season. Definitely. It was the right decision to declare. He's now a guarantee multi-millionaire, and another injury could've ended his career.

It's unfortunate he dealt with so many injuries, but he's still a National Champion and our best QB ever.

I feel good about our QB situation next season. Mac Jones looked really good against Auburn and Michigan, and Bryce Young is a 5* freshman.

I have a question for you. Which coach would you rather have. They all have 13 years head coaching experience (#1 was fired mid-season hence why he has less games).

131-77, with an 8-7 postseason record, and one Super Bowl with an all-time great QB
125-77, with a 10-8 playoff record and a Super Bowl with an all-time great QB.
133-74, with an 8-7 playoff record, no Super Bowls with a Hall of Fame caliber QB.

the answers and the rest of my post are in spoilers so as to not ruin the little guessing game.

Sean Payton
Mike McCarthy
Mike Tomlin

Mike McCarthy gets shit on while the other 2 (who have had LESS SUCCESS, less playoff wins, less playoff appearances) get all the love.

If Mike McCarthy should have won more Super Bowls with Aaron Rodgers, then Sean Payton should be fired because he should have won more Super Bowls with Drew Brees. And Mike Tomlin with Ben Roesthlisberger.

Joe Judge was the Special Teams Coordinator since 2015. He was the WR coach only this season (while also being special teams coordinator). New England has had a beast special teams for a while now so if we're gonna... judge... him on his squads play lets also give them props for that. (not sorry for the pun)

I don't get it. Explain it to me BSE like I'm 5 please.

It's almost definitely false. Mostly just a dig at Falcons fans. However I wouldn't completely rule it out.

Atlanta's OC Kyle Shanahan agreed to become 49ers HC before the Super Bowl vs the Patriots. Shanahan knew he needed a franchise QB, so he made a deal with Belichick. Shanahan would lose the Super Bowl, and Belichick would trade him Garoppolo for just a 2nd round pick.

The biggest evidence of the conspiracy is Shanahan's horrific second half playcalling in the Super Bowl, most notably a situation late in the 4th quarter.

Atlanta was up 28-20 and had a 1st and 10 at the NE 22 with 4:40 left in the game. Atlanta could've called 3 straight runs, burned all of NE's timeouts, and kicked a FG to take a 2 possession lead with just under 4 minutes left.

Instead they called 3 straight passes, lost 23 yards from a sack and holding call, only burned 1 minute off the clock and 1 NE timeout, and punted. The Patriots tied the game on the next possession with a TD and 2PC and won in OT.

But bad clock management with a 25 point lead was more on the Falcons than the Patriots. Which bye week? Their actual bye or Week 17 when they didn't play their starters?

I never understand that, especially for a team that has a bye week. Yeah obviously if the guy is hurt you rest him to get him as healhty as possible, but Load Management doesn't work in football.

It's not terribly surprising. Running the ball has always worked in the postseason. Titans do that better than everyone right now.

I hate to say this, but congrats to the National Champions, LSU. They had one of the most impressive seasons in recent history. They defeated all of the following teams (rank is based on the AP Poll):

#2 Clemson - 13-1 ACC Champion / Fiesta Bowl Winner
#4 Georgia - 12-2 Sugar Bowl Winner
#6 Florida - 11-2 Orange Bowl Winner
#7 Oklahoma - 12-2 Big 12 Champion
#8 Alabama - 11-2 Citrus Bowl Winner
They won these games by an average of 19.6 points and the top four teams by at least 14 points.

Joe Burrow was insanely good. Far better than even the most diehard LSU fans could've ever imagined. Look at his stats compared to last year:

2018 - 219-379, 57.8%, 2894 Yards, 7.6 YPA, 16 TD, 5 INT

2019 - 402-527, 76.3%, 5671 Yards, 10.8 YPA, 60 TD, 6 INT

That's a nearly 20% better completion percentage, 2800 more yards, 3 more yards per attempt, 44 more TD passes, and just 1 more INT on 148 more passes! He was reportedly accurate on 90% of his throws!! We've never seen a player improve that much in one season and likely never will again. All I can say as a non-LSU fan is thank goodness he's out of eligibility and going to the NFL.

Quite frankly, Burrow is everything we thought Trevor Lawrence would be this season. Don't get me wrong - there's no doubt Lawrence (and Clemson) had a great season, but Lawrence had a really rough game tonight. He completed less than half of his passes and missed several throws. He's still the #1 overall prospect in 2021, but after last season, he was seen as the greatest QB prospect ever. Now that honor arguably goes to Burrow. I'm not writing Lawrence off, but tonight was very disappointing.

Yeah I didn't mean to imply Minnesota wasn't that good this year. They were very good. Very close to a Top 10 team.

My point was how inconsistent Auburn can be. They beat the Pac-12 and Rose Bowl Champions to start the season, scored the most points ever on Saban's Alabama and officially ended their playoff hopes, and held a historically good offense to their fewest points scored.

However they still finished with 4 losses and lost their bowl game.

Malzahn's Auburn is similar to Harbaugh's Michigan. Almost always good but stuck at 9-10 wins maximum. Could be a lot worse and have been before their tenures, but they can't get over the hump.

My college football decade awards. These are just my opinion, but I expect a call from ESPN soon.

Best Coach - Nick Saban

Yep.

Worst Coach - Ellis Johnson

He took over a 12-2 Southern Miss team with 13 returning starters and went 0-12.

Best Team - 2019 LSU

Their defense struggled at times, but they defeated 5 top-10 teams and 4 of those teams by 14+ points.

Best Team That Didn't Win The National Championship - 2011 LSU

They defeated the Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, and Cotton Bowl champions and the eventual National Champion on the road. 2015 Ohio State arguably had the most potential, but for whatever reason, it never came together.

Best Player - Cam Newton

He was as close to a one-man National Championship as you'll ever see. Only 3 other starters were drafted, and no RB, WR, or TE had a single touch in the NFL. HC Gene Chizik went 8-5 in 2011 and 3-9 (0-8 vs the SEC) in 2012, Auburn's worst season in 60 years. Recency bias suggests Joe Burrow, but he had a far better supporting cast and coaching staff.

Best Transfer - Joe Burrow

He threw 60 TDs, led the 3rd highest scoring offense of all time, and won a National Championship.

Best Game - Alabama vs Georgia 2017 National Championship

Call me biased, but this should at least be in everyone's Top 10. Both teams suffered a bad loss to Auburn but rebounded to make the playoffs. In the first round, Alabama got revenge against Clemson, holding them to only 6 points. Georgia defeated Oklahoma 54-48 in 2OT. Alabama had won 4 titles in 8 years; Georgia hadn't won since 1980.

The game itself had everything: Georgia dominating the first half and taking a 13-0 lead. Little known WR Riley Ridley outperforming his star brother Calvin. Jalen Hurts struggling and getting benched for Tua Tagovailoa, a 5* freshman with a ton of potential but no real experience. An 80 yard TD pass from Georgia. An Alabama player collapsing on the sideline. 7 freshman playing on Alabama's offense. An Alabama player fighting a coach on the sideline. An INT from Bama's DT that bounced off the center's helmet. Bama tying the game on 4th down with a TD pass to Ridley, who Tua didn't even see when he threw the ball. Alabama missing a game winning 36 yard FG to end regulation.

In OT, Terrell Lewis (who missed 12 games with an injury) sacks Fromm on 3rd down to force a 52-yard FG. However Georgia makes it because apparently goggles give you that ability. Bama gets the ball, and Tua takes probably the worst sack ever, losing 16 yards. It's 2nd and 26 at the 41, Bama needs a FG to extend the game, and their kicker had already missed 2 FGs. Then Tua looks off the safety and throws a game-winning walkoff TD to Devonta Smith.

Then one of my most memorable and heartbreaking images in sports - Georgia senior RBs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel holding each other on the sideline and nearly crying because the game meant that much to them. Such a sweet win for Alabama and such a heartbreaking loss for Georgia.

Worst Game - Alabama vs LSU 2011 National Championship

I loved this as an Alabama fan, but this was horrible for everyone else. Alabama really shouldn't have even been there. No TDs were scored until late in the 4th, and LSU lost 21-0 and never even passed the 50 yard line. There's probably a worse game than this, but none were as big as this game.

Best Play - Kick Six

Moving on...

Worst Loss - 2016 Texas vs Kansas

Kansas was 12-60 from 2010-2015 with only 4 P5 wins. They had lost 19 straight conference games. HC David Beaty was 1-21 in 2 years, with his only win coming against FCS Rhode Island. And yet somehow Kansas actually won. I've never seen a sideline look so distraught and hopeless after a loss. Now this was a meaningless game and other teams have lost much more important games, but all of those teams at least had hope. Texas was ranked #11 after an upset win over Notre Dame to begin the season and lost to the worst team in the FBS in the same season.

Raheem Mostert now has 196 yards and 4 TDs in the NFC Championship.

He was signed by the Eagles, Dolphins, Ravens, Browns, Jets, and Bears and didn't receive a single carry in the regular season.

How did so many teams miss?

The Detroit Tigers once drafted Patrick Mahomes, which means they've drafted more Super Bowl starting QBs than the Detroit Lions.

Just to illustrate how bad our run defense has been:

Since the 49ers took a 7-0 lead, they've scored 27 points and only completed one pass.

I'm excited for the Chiefs vs Niners, should be an exciting game and I'm thinking were in for a high scoring super bowl which would be nice after last year was a snooze fest where nobody could move the ball. I'm rooting for the Chiefs to win as I really like Mahomes and they've been one of the teams I've been hoping would win the SB this year ever since I realized my Colts and Broncos had no hope this year. But I'm just glad one way or the other a team that hasn't won a championship in a long time is going to win this one. It's a nice change of pace.

I'm still waiting for Jimmy Garoppolo to take off his face paint and makeup Eric Bischoff style and reveal he was actually Nathan Peterman in disguise.

No other explanation for his historically horrible play. 3-11, 36 yards, INT, 4th down sack in the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl. Chiefs absolutely deserved to win, but if Garoppolo's even decent, 49ers win.

Kyle Shanahan has coached in two Super Bowls, yesterday and as offensive coordinator for the Falcons who were ahead of the Patriots 28-3 in the third quarter of Super Bowl LI and lost 28-34.

In the two games, his teams put up a total of 48 first half points and 0 points in the fourth quarters.

Jimmy Garoppolo had the highest completion percentage against pressure in the regular season. 0-7 with 2 INT in the Super Bowl.

According to PFF, Russell Wilson only had 29 clean pockets ALL SEASON. Literally less than 2 per game.

Anyway, the re-launch of the XFL debuts this weekend. There has been little to no promotion whatsoever for it's return. Anyone going to watch this? Former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops is coaching the Dallas team, so to no surprise, I'm cheering for the Dallas team.

Edit: Former Sooners QB Landry Jones is the QB for Dallas. Yes, Dallas is my team, and I know nothing about them.
