Sorry, I've been in Italy. I watched Justice League on the plane there. It wasn't very good, but it left more of an impression than Ant-Man & The Wasp did on the way back.

I quite like the idea of really big budget Hollywood horror.
Still confused by that opening.
According to some film festival that was held last week, it's the movie equivalent of the coming of Jesus. People who were in attendance say that it got an 8 minute standing ovation at the end and that it's a lock for all the major awards during awards season.
So, idk.....
The average consumer, ones who will pay to see it, will probably want something a bit more Batman-y.
The eight minute standing ovation at its worldwide premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Founded in 1932, it's the oldest film festival in the world and is considered one of the "Big Three" festivals along with the Cannes Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival. Joker won the Golden Lion award, which is given to the best film shown at the festival.
When it comes to the artistic aspect of the film community, an American film winning best picture at the Venice Film Festival is a big deal, especially considering it's a film based on a comic book character. Right now, Rotten Tomatoes has it at only 76% fresh, based just on 100 reviews. Some like IGN went nuts over it, giving it a 10/10 while Roger Ebert.com gave it only 2 stars. One thing that nearly all the critics agree on, however, are the performances, especially Phoenix's. So yeah, I expect there'll be a huge outcry if Phoenix doesn't at least get an Oscar nomination.
This probably won't be some heavy action based CGI thing, it's only got a budget of about $50 million. Much of that probably went to the salaries of Phoenix and De Niro so this will probably be a movie that'll rest entirely on the performances of the top stars. I have no doubt it'll make money, I've no doubt it'll make a profit its first weekend in release but will it be a record setter? Deadpool only cost a few million more to make than Joker and it wound up taking in nearly $740 million worldwide and was R rated as well. Sure, you had the fights, you had the effects and CGI, but Ryan Reynolds' performance as Deadpool had people hooked. So as far as Joker goes, who knows? Just depends on how many people fall in love with his performance. Conservatively, I'm saying it ultimately does $400 million worldwide.

It looks like the future of the DCEU is going to be these stand alone movies that tell a great story by themselves rather than one huge shared universe that tells a collective story. According to what I've read regarding the Joker, it supposedly does have the scene where the Wayne's get murdered. One would think that adding that scene would mean that this Joker is going to tie into the new Batman with the Twilight dude. They're assuring people, though, that that's not the case and this is a stand alone story. If this is successful, this will probably be the route that DC takes with their films moving forward. They've proven that they can't compete with the shared universe style. So maybe what they'll do moving forward is make very good/Oscar worthy comicbook films with great performances and stories. Movies like the Dark Knight and Logan have shown that it definitely can be done and if the rumors are correct, the Joker will be added to that list as well.
It's interesting to say the least.
