If you're thinking of seeing Mortal Kombat you should abort immediately.
The 1995 Mortal Kombat, for all its faults, remains the best adaption, and that makes me sad. And Annihilation is one of the best movies ever to watch when drunk.

Compared to the originals, this new Mortal Kombat is Oscar worthy. If only for them being smart enough to go Rated R. Seriously, you don?t watch these movies for good acting. The question I had from the movie, is this Cole Young character from a newer game I don?t know, or did they just force some random character into the story?
The latter.
A Mortal Kombat film is simple. Have a tournament and cool fatalities. This doesn't really have them. Takes itself very seriously for such a silly film too.
There is no tournament. It's just set in a dull cave for half the movie and shits on a bunch of characters.
Kano was great though, I'll give the movie that.

The movie is the prelude to the tournament. You need to build up the characters to make the tournament mean anything.
Mortal Kombat 2 will likely be the tournament. And I fail to see how they shit on the characters. While I wasn't a fan of the original character, the legacy ones were all good.
Honestly I'd like them to do a mini-series for HBO Max akin to Falcon % Winter Soldier.
Nah, don't set up sequels. Have the film you need to have and take it from there.
And have somebody grab an opponent's tongue then turn them inside out to get me excited for what a sequel may offer.
