    Fantasy Rebooking: Bret Hart's Ascension

I'm a fan of these fantasy rebookings, so here's my first try at one.

    1993

    WrestleMania IX
Hulk Hogan makes no appearance at the end of the main event between Bret Hart and Yokozuna. Yokozuna wins the WWF Championship in the same dirty fashion and becomes the first heel to win the title at WrestleMania.

Build up to King of the Ring
Instead of Bret getting the rematch he deserves, Hogan in a way steals it from him in a bit of a quasi-heel move. Hogan, however, promises Bret to be his first opponent if he wins it.

    King of the Ring
Yokozuna squashes Hogan. In fact, the only offense Hogan gets is the Hulk Up, which in a way looks like it’s done out of desperation. Hogan nails the Leg Drop, but Yokozuna throws him off easily at 1. Hogan looks completely shocked and has no answers for the monster. Yokozuna eventually finishes off Hogan with the Banzai Drop after a belly to belly suplex. For added drama, Yokozuna repeatedly Banzai Drops Hogan until blood starts to come out of Hogan’s mouth and they have to use a stretcher on him. Hulkamania dies ala Apollo Creed in Rocky 4 and Yokozuna is now established as a mega monster heel.

Meanwhile, Bret wins the King of the Ring tournament by defeating “The Narcissist” Lex Luger in the finals.

    Build up to Summerslam
No changes here; Luger still randomly shows up to be the big hero to slam Yokozuna on the Intrepid despite being a heel the day prior. Although the Lex Express storyline is insanely dumb compared to him actually wrestling to work his way up to the title, it will make sense later on the story.

While Luger is off traveling around the country to get his title shot, Bret keeps working his way up.

    Summerslam
Instead of having Luger and all of the other faces celebrate his “victory” via countout and making them all look like idiots, they celebrate him actually winning the belt. One small detail during the celebration: Bret tries to shake hands, but Luger seems to accidentally snub him.

    Survivor Series
Instead of having Luger win it for his team by eliminating Ludwig Borga, Yokozuna wins it by eliminating Luger. I’d have it where Luger has numerous chances to eliminate Yokozuna, but doesn’t do it out of arrogance. Eventually, Yokozuna catches him in a belly-to-belly and the Banzai Drop finishes Luger off and completely embarrasses him.

No changes are made to Bret’s Survivor Series match because that led to his feud with Owen.

    1994

    Royal Rumble
In essentially their rubber match, Luger retains the title against Yokozuna, but resorts to slightly dirty tactics to do so.

Bret wins the Royal Rumble as originally scripted.

    Build up to WrestleMania X
Here’s where things get interesting. As time goes on, Luger slowly starts to act more and more like his old Narcissist gimmick. He says it’d be an honor to fight Bret, but gets cocky because he beat a guy thrice the size of Bret twice.

Out comes Bret. He points out how Luger lost to him at King of the Ring last year and got the title shot over a body slam and sitting in a bus while he, Bret, actually wrestled. Luger then basically completes his heel turn by calling Bret a “Canadian twerp” that doesn’t stand a chance against the All-American and that he’s everyone’s hero (a bit of a jab at that stupid I’ll Be Your Hero song, which still plays at the end of Summerslam 1993), not Bret.

The innovative thing here is that although Luger is a full-blown heel, he still thinks he’s a babyface. He still sucks up the crowd and all that schtick. He’s basically a prototypical Kurt Angle.

    WrestleMania X
Bret still loses to Owen in the opening classic.

Bret then defeats Luger in the main event and celebrates with the other babyfaces. Luger slowly walks up the ramp and passes by Owen, who glares at his brother. This will kickstart the Owen/Bret feud as originally scripted.
