Simply put, many Christians use religion as an excuse for their bigotry, racism, and homophobia. They are completely oblivious to the main principle Jesus stood for - showing love and compassion towards all people, regardless of race, sexuality, gender, religion, political beliefs, or any other factor.
I've attended just one church (for an extended period of time) in southern Mississippi, so I can't speak for everyone. However considering who our president is and the support Christians have continued to show him, this is almost definitely happening all over the country. It's truly a shame.
I'm not saying this is 100% fact. I don't have any evidence other than my own experiences. I'm also not saying all Christians are like this; many of them are certainly not. Regardless, I believe enough of them are to turn so many people away from religion. Christians should practice what they preach (yes that's a cliche, but it's true). Love others. Forgive others. Give to the poor. Help those in need. Stop with the whole "us against the world" mentality, and try to unite with others, rather than drifting further and further apart.
